من المهم ملاحظة أن معاملة مرتكبي الجرائم بإنصاف وعدالة تُساهم في التزامهم بالقانون في المستقبل وفقاً لمؤلفات توم تايلر أستاذ القانون بجامعة يال الأمريكية في هذا الصدد، ومنها ما يتناول أهمية الشرعية في الحفاظ على النظام العام،[1] ولماذا يطيع الناس القانون؟،[2] وبناء مجتمع يحترم القانون،[3] والثقة في القانون (تشجيع تعاون الجمهور مع الشرطة والمحاكم)،[4] والشرعية والعدالة الجنائية.[5]
